Live blackjack Tutorial

Many players are intimidated by the prospect of playing live Blackjack online, but it’s actually very easy. This is largely because the multitude of Blackjack varieties that are available in virtual format are not on offer with a live game. Live Blackjack comes in the standard European format almost exclusively, which is exactly what you’d get at a genuine UK land casino.

So how does it work? Firstly, you select a room that has stake levels to suit you. If the room is full the software will tell you, and you’ll need to find another room. Once you’ve occupied a seat, make your bet by placing chips into the circle provided.

Once you and any players sitting alongside you (it could be just you and the dealers, or up to 7 players in total) have all laid bets down, the cards will be dealt from a shoe. You’ll be given two upturned cards, whilst the dealer will give themselves two cards with only one face down.

Your aim is to then either Hit or Stand – stop playing or continue taking cards – until you get as close to 21 as you think you need to be in order to beat what the dealer is likely to achieve. If you’ve bust (exceeded 21) then the dealer automatically wins; otherwise the dealer turns their face-down card (otherwise known as the Hole card) up, and will Hit or Stand according to strict rules which dictate that they must Hit until they reach 17.

Outside of this basic game of twenty one there are a few other options:

Firstly, when the dealer’s hand first appears (i.e., with one card turned face up) there may be an Ace showing. If this is the case it’s quite possible that the dealer may have a Blackjack (an Ace with a picture card or ten. Aces are worth one or eleven and a Blackjack is unbeatable). When this happens you can opt to take Insurance by making a side bet which pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has a Blackjack. This will cancel out some or all of any losses you make on your main bet.
You can also Double Down: If your hand total eleven or less you’re allowed to double your bet and receive one more card if you wish.

Finally, you’re allowed to split any cards except Aces. That means two cards of the same value can be split into two hands and you’ll play each separately, against the same dealer hand.

You can leave and rejoin the table at any time if you need to get on with jobs around the house or anything else that may crop up – though if you stay away long enough then the software will cancel the game for you and let someone else have your space. It’s all highly intuitive and you’ll find it becomes very natural after just a few rounds.
