Introduction to Blackjack Strategy

All the top Blackjack players use a strategy to manage their bankroll in line with the amounts they aspire to win, though before looking at any particular ways to do that it does need to be pointed out that nobody can find a way to beat the casino on a regular basis.

If that were possible you’d be seeing stories of players taking casinos to the cleaners every week, and they’d simply go out of business – so what exactly do we mean by strategy when it comes to Blackjack?

This question really needs to be split into two: Firstly, you need to know how much to bet in any given scenario, and then you need to know how whether to Hit or Stand as you progress through each round.

The latter problem is actually pretty easy to solve: Deciding whether to Hit or Stand on the European Blackjack variant found at virtually every single live online Blackjack casino site is best worked out using a simple strategy card. These are freely available online and will tell you what to do with any combination of player and dealer cards once the game is in progress.

More complex, though, is how to decide what to bet. This depends on your attitude to risk and how much you’d like to win, and there are many methods on offer to help you out.

More basic ideas include the Martingale and D’Alembert methods: These involve betting more every time you lose, to recoup losses and remain ahead. In the case of Martingale it’s a pure double-or-quits method, whilst D’Alembert is a little less scary with each losing bet increased by a unit of one.

These methods – Martingale in particular – require a large bankroll as they are progressive. That means you bet more when you lose, which makes your bankroll prone to large swings when you use them. However, you can also use anti-versions of the same methods, betting less when your luck is down to avoid such swings.

If you want something a little more sophisticated then ideas like LaBouchere and the Up and Pull method will be of more interest. These use defined or custom-built numerical progressions that tell you how much to multiply winning or losing bets by, and are about as advanced as you’ll find.

Each strategy, however, is only an off-the-shelf template for you to use. Every player’s risk/reward profile is different and will change from time to time, so the use of any strategy or collection of strategies will need altering at different times. Only with experience will you discover what’s right for you under any given circumstance, and this is where demo play comes in.

There is no discernible difference between virtual and live Blackjack in terms of outcomes, so virtual games will be perfect for testing out strategies. You can sit and play for as many hours as you like, watch your fortunes wax and wane and develop the very best strategy imaginable for any occasion – so what are you waiting for? It costs nothing and you’ll quickly learn to play like a pro.
